Big third quarter sparks Dutchmen past Elkhart
ELKHART LAKE – Oostburg outscored the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters 22-7 in the third quarter to ignite a 62-44 boys basketball victory here Friday night.
The Flying Dutchmen, ranked No. 7 in Division 3 last week, hiked their Central Lakeshore Conferenceleading record to 13-2 (15-2 overall). Elkhart dropped to 2-12 in CLC action (2-15 overall).
The Resorters led 13-10 after one period, keyed by Dane Blake’s six points, and were down only 23-21 at halftime. Oostburg busted the contest open in the third quarter, fueled by its defense, to go up 45-28.
The Dutchmen scored several baskets off steals in the third period. Mike Keller and Marcus Buehler spearheaded Oostburg’s attack in the quarter with seven and six points, respectively.
“We played really well as a team. It all started with defense and being patient,” said Resorter head coach Jeremy Harrison.
“In the third quarter, we just had too many turnovers and they scored easy baskets.”
Oostburg had an impressive 20 steals, led by Buehler’s six. Keller scored a game-high 23 points and shared the team’s assist lead with Mike Paluchniak at five each.
Blake paced Elkhart scorers with 19 and Travis Kosnicki netted 17. “Jon Petrie had a great defensive game which helped spark the defense in the first quarter,” Harrison said.
