Defense, balance key Resorters’ rout
ELKHART LAKE – A balanced attack and tenacious defense powered the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters to a 62-21 thumping of Sheboygan Christian in girls basketball here Thursday night.
The Resorters, who had three players scoring in double figures, blew the game open in the first half as they outscored the Eagles 34-8.
Elkhart upped its Central Lakeshore Conference record to 9-5 (11-6 overall). Christian fell to 2-12 in the CLC (3-15 overall).
The Resorters’ pressure defense took its toll on the Eagles. Elkhart’s transition game was also effective.
“We got some baskets off steals from our press and that was probably the key. I thought we played well,” said Resorter head coach Don Kulow.
Junior center Anna Vollrath sparked the Resorters with a team-high 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Kate Vollrath and Chelsea Watry contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively. Kate Vollrath also grabbed eight boards.
Stephanie Knepfel had a team-high five steals for Elkhart. Maddie Landgraf, Rachel Knowles and Kate Vollrath dished out four assists apiece as the Resorters finished with a season-high 20.
“We attacked their zone well. Our guards found the gaps and created,” Kulow said.
“Anna had a good game overall. She was 8-for-14 from the field. Her teammates did a nice job of getting the ball inside to here.
“It was a great team effort,” he said.
