PHS Jolly Pranksters comedy team competes in Milwaukee Feb. 20

The PHS Jolly Pranksters comedy team starts competing in the 2010 Milwaukee ComedySportz High School League season Saturday, Feb. 20, when they play Greendale High School at 11 a.m., Pius High School at noon, and Tosa West High School at 1 p.m.

The team encourages their fans to follow them down to Milwaukee and cheer them on by laughing while they compete.

The next date the Jolly Pranksters play in the league is Saturday, April 3, when the team takes on a Thomas More High School at 11 a.m., Waukesha South High School at noon, and Rufus King High School at 1 p.m. Then they will play the last two games of the regular season Saturday, April 17, at 11 a.m. when the Jolly Pranksters play Milwaukee High School for the Arts and then Pius High School at noon.

ComedySportz was started by Dick Chudnow in Milwaukee 25 years ago, and is also played in several United States cities as well as in the United Kingdom. A ComedySportz show involves two teams of players who spontaneously create comedic scenes and skits. Each team competes to win the approval of the audience, and the team that is dubbed by the referee as being the funniest team wins the match.

Audience participation is highly encouraged and an integral part of each show. ComedySportz professionals also offer training in comic improvisation techniques to both adults and students.

The PHS Jolly Pranksters is the only high school comic improvisation team from Sheboygan County that participates in the ComedySportz High School League in Milwaukee.

To be part of the Milwaukee ComedySportz High School League, student teams need an advisor and at least three team members. Each member pays $110 to attend five months of weekly comic improvisation workshops held in Milwaukee at the ComedySportz Arena, and after completing the workshops, team members begin competing in Milwaukee with other schools.

The regular ComedySportz High School League season begins Saturday, Feb. 13, and runs every Saturday through April 24 followed by the annual tournament, which runs Saturdays, May 1, 8, 15 and 22. Admission to the games is $3 for one game, $5 for two, and $7 for all three. The Milwaukee ComedySportz Arena is located at 420 S. First St.

The 2009-10 PHS Jolly Pranksters Team members are seniors, Samantha DeVries, Leah Glassford, Luke Murray, Devon Riederer, Cody Wisman; junior, Marissa Murphy; and sophomores, Christopher Gideon, and Jesse Meyer (team captain).
