Resorters coast to league win
ELKHART LAKE – After a sluggish start, the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters turned on the afterburners in the second quarter en route to a 66-26 pummeling of Stockbridge Friday night at the Elkhart gym.
The Resorters, who outscored the Indians 25-4 in the second period, raised their Central Lakeshore Conference girls basketball mark to 10-6 (12-7 overall).
“We were a little sluggish and sloppy in the first quarter and also missed six free throws in the quarter. Our intensity really picked up in the second quarter,” said Elkhart head coach Don Kulow.
“In the second quarter, our press made them rush their shots and we got some steals that led to transition baskets. We did a nice job [overall in the game].”
Sophomore guard Maddie Landgraf keyed the Resorters’ attack in the second quarter with eight points. Landgraf and junior guard Becca Hembel paced the Resorter scoring on the night with 12 points each. Hembel, who came off the bench, scored a career-best total.
Elkhart’s defense forced 30 turnovers and was led in steals by Landgraf with a personal-high seven, followed by Stephanie Knepfel with five.
Chelsea Watry led the Resorters on the boards with six rebounds. Haley Kammerzelt, Rachel Knowles and Kate Vollrath had a team-high three assists apiece. Alli Holzmann was first in blocked shots with two.
The Elkhart reserves played most of the second half and accounted for 27 of the team’s 29 points. Kulow said the bench played well. All 12 Resorters tallied points.
JV GAME
No junior varsity game was played because Stockbridge doesn’t have a JV squad. The Resorters fell to host Cedar Grove-Belgium, 35-23, Tuesday night in CLC play.
Elkhart (6-8 in CLC and 7-10 overall), was led on offense by Kammerzelt with six points. Emily Grunewald pulled down a team-best five boards.
