Dickmyer’s late three-point play gives Tigers comeback win

by Craig Hoffman Tri-County News

NEW HOLSTEIN – Eric Dickmyer completed a three-point play with six seconds to go to climax a fourth-quarter comeback as the Howards Grove Tigers tripped up host New Holstein, 53-50, in a makeup, nonconference boys basketball contest Monday night.

The Huskies' Tyler Zipperer then missed a three-point attempt at the final buzzer.

“We were talking to our guys that New Holstein was a hot team and this would be a very nice win," said Tiger head coach Chris Schroeder.

“We saw them beat Sheboygan Falls last week. We knew how good they are.”

New Holstein has beaten Waupun and Plymouth over the past two weeks, the top two teams in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, respectively. The Huskies were coming off an upset win at Plymouth Friday night, 59-56, that ruined the Panthers’ EWC title hopes.

The Tigers, who have won six in a row, raised their record to 14-6. New Holstein dropped to 10-9.

The Huskies raced out to a 20-12 lead – scoring the final eight points of the opening period as Brett Boettcher scored five points and Charlie Cash, three. But the pace of play slowed noticeably in the second quarter and the teams were tied at 28 heading to halftime.

Cash nailed a three-pointer to put the Huskies back up to start the third quarter and they maintained the lead until Howards’ Aaron Wagner nailed a triple with 3:16 left in the game for a 47-46 Tiger advantage.

Boettcher’s turnaround, 10-foot jumper with 40 seconds left tied it for the Huskies. Following a Howards timeout, Dickmyer sank a lean-in jumper and was fouled with six seconds to go. He made the free throw to make it 53-50 Howards.

New Holstein got the ball upcourt quickly where Zipperer's potential game-tying three-pointer rolled off the rim as the horn sounded.

“This was a tune-up for the [regional] tournament,” said New Holstein head coach Ken Stephany.

“A week ago, this could have been a big loss. But the seeding is done. We have another tune-up on Friday against Kewaskum before we start the regionals.”

Eric Bruesewitz and Josh Horness led a balanced Tiger scoring attack with 11 points each. Bruesewitz also had a team-high four assists.

Horness paced Howards in steals with four. Matt Wleklinski grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Ashton Holzman led in blocked shots at two.

Zipperer led the Huskies with 12 points.

JV, FROSH GAMES

The Tigers won the junior varsity contest, 46-40. Mike Davis paced the Howards’ offense with 11 points.

In freshman play, the Tigers triumphed, 51-41, behind Cody Klemme’s 22 points. Sam Guse added 15 for Howards.
