Beimel is ready for more

Upon the completion of her first two-year term on the Sheboygan Falls Common Council, Dawn Beimel is eager to continue her tenure as the 3rd District aldermanic representative.

As a newcomer to the council, Beimel went into her first term with her eyes wide open.

“I was pretty nervous about it at first,” she said. “I had never run for public office or really done anything like that before.

“Once I got into the flow of things and learned what was going on and how the process worked, I really started to enjoy it.”

The 1991 Sheboygan Falls High School graduate and mother of two expects a variety of financial issues to fill many meeting agendas in the upcoming year.

“The budget was tough last year and this year it will probably be even tougher,” Beimel said. “Last year we made some hard decisions on cutbacks and ways to save money.

“That took up a lot of time, but I think we did the best job we could, given the financial situation we were in,” she said.

Beimel, who recently joined the staff of Palo Popcorn in Sheboygan Falls, has served as the Public Health and Welfare Committee chairperson since being elected to the council in 2008.

“Almost all of the Public Health and Welfare Committee meetings are held in closed sessions, which means many people don’t really get a chance to know what we do,” she said. “The committee basically reviews beer and liquor license applications and appeals.

“Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions on people who are hoping to land a job to support themselves or their family. Based on a person’s past history, sometimes things just don’t work out.”

Beimel, who has been a member of the Sheboygan Falls Jaycees since 2002, is looking forward to the next two years.

“I learned a lot in my first term,” she said. “It has been a great experience for me.

“We have a good community and a council that works well together. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent the community. It has been great to be a part of this, and I am ready for what new challenges might lie ahead.”
