Defense rescues Panthers

CAMPBELLSPORT – Plymouth overcame 20 turnovers with strong defense to defeat host Campbellsport, 38-27, in a girls basketball game Friday night.

The Eastern Wisconsin Conference contest was the regular-season finale for both teams. PHS finished third in the EWC at 9-5 and improved to 13-9 overall. The Panthers will face Berlin in a Division 2 regional opener Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at PHS.

Campbellsport finished 3-11 in the EWC and dropped to 4-18 overall.

“We didn’t play well, offensively. We had too many unforced turnovers,” said Panther head coach Brad Shutter. “Hopefully, this game will be an eye-opener for us.

“We played good defense.”

The Cougars shot only 29 percent (10 of 35) from the field.

The Panthers held the Cougars to only one point in the third quarter. PHS scored 10 in the period to extend its lead to 32-13.

Freshman center Rachael Cecka scored a season-high 13 points to lead PHS. Cecka erupted for 11 in the first half, including seven in the opening quarter, to spark the Panthers to a 22-12 halftime lead.

“Rachael gave us a spark in the first quarter. She attacked the basket nice,” Shutter said.

“Ali Thompson had a good game overall.”

Cecka also led PHS in assists with four. Thompson had a team-high eight rebounds and shared the lead in steals with Kaitlyn Hoffmann with three apiece.

JV GAME

The Panthers ended their junior varsity season with a nine-game winning streak as they cruised to a 60- 24 win. PHS posted an 11-3 league record and a 17-5 overall mark.

“Tonight was a great team effort. Every player scored and we forced 33 turnovers,” said PHS coach Mike Gumm.

“It was a great way to end the season.”

Plymouth’s attack was led by Jenni Rathsack with 12 points and Rachel Holzhaeuser, 11. Joanne Wolfenberg had a team-high seven rebounds and Emma Addy contributed five.

Holzhaeuser sparked the PHS defense with eight steals. Marissa Grapentine and Rathsack led in assists with three each.
