CARL B. SCHMIDT
Carl B. Schmidt, age 94, of New Holstein (formerly of Plymouth), passed away early Sunday afternoon, March 7, 2010, at Homestead Care Center in New Holstein, where he had been a resident for the last three months.
He was born Oct. 13, 1915 in Plymouth, Wis., a son of the late John and Wilma (Wandersleben) Schmidt. At a young age, Carl was raised by his loving grandparents and his Aunt Irene. Carl attended St. John Lutheran School in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1933.
He served his community as Plymouth city assessor for eight years, was a member of the Plymouth Library Board and the Plymouth Plan Commission.
His grandfather, C.F. Wandersleben and great-uncle Henry Wandersleben formed a printing company in Plymouth in 1884. Carl started working in the business at the age of 9 and continued running the business known as Wandersleben – Schmidt Printing until it had reached its 100th anniversary in 1984.
Carl served in the United States Army in the European Theater and was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He was married to Dorothy (Taylor) Fluhr on May 31, 1986, at Zion Lutheran Church in New Holstein, Wis. They traveled widely in the United States, China, Europe and the Caribbean. Dorothy preceded him in death Aug. 20, 2007.
He is a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Holstein, and the New Holstein American Legion Post #124 and the DAV.
Carl is survived by one stepson, Paul (Mary) Fluhr of New Holstein; one stepdaughter, Doris (William) Larson of Green Bay; four step grandchildren: Jennifer (Mark) Losey, Mark Larson, Lori (Cory) Rolf and Tim (Nicole Christiansen) Larson; seven step greatgrandchildren: Matthew and Grace Losey, Karlee and Kalli Larson, Myah and Mitchell Rolf, Haylee Larson; and sister-in-law, Betty Schmidt of Ellicott, Md. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; two brothers, George and John Schmidt; two sisters, Carita Fulwiler and Rose Flickinger; one sister-in-law, Wanda Schmidt; and two brothers-in-law, Leonard Fulwiler and Carl Flickinger.
Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in New Holstein on Wednesday morning, March 10. The Rev. John Schenck, pastor of the church, officiated. Carl was laid to rest next to his loving wife, Dorothy, in the New Holstein City Cemetery. Military rites were held at the cemetery following the services.
A memorial fund is being established in Carl’s name for the New Holstein First Responders and Zion Lutheran Church.
