Boating safety education classes to be offered

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department invites all individuals interested in recreational boating to enroll in our Wisconsin Boating Safety Course. The course is 12 hours long and will be held at the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, 525 N. Sixth St., Sheboygan. The class will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday April 24, May 1, and May 8, 2010. Students are required to attend all three days to complete the course. The fee to attend is $10, which covers the registration and course book. Upon successful completion, students will receive their Boating Safety Certificate from the Department of Natural Resources.

Who is required to attend the class? A Wisconsin boating safety certification or out-of-state equivalent certification is required for operators born Jan. 1, 1989, or later and at least 16 years of age. Operators 12- to-15 years of age must either have a certificate or have an adult on board while operating. Anyone 10 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education completion certificate. The certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age.

Parents and adults are also invited to participate in the class. Class size is limited to 26 students and advanced registration is requested.

The course will cover the following: • All about boats, classification • of boats, hull designs, and motors. Legal requirements including registration and equipment requirements.

• Navigation rules, basic safety regulations, and waterway marking systems.

• Getting underway, preparation, loading, boarding, cruising, docking, anchoring, knots, trailering, courtesy, and maintenance.

• Boat accidents, emergency measures, aquatic safety, alcohol usage, visual distress signals, fire on board, and first aid.

The course will be taught by members of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department Boat Patrol.
