Panthers’ Cecka, Gumm All-EWC second team
Falls’ Hamilton Co-Coach of the Year
by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff
Senior 6-foot-1 forward Emily Cecka and 5-8 junior guard Amanda Gumm of Plymouth were named to the 2009-10 All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference girls basketball second team.
Gumm led the EWC in free-throw shooting for the second straight season – hitting 78.7 percent (48 of 61). She ranked sixth in assists with a 2.2 average per game, tied for eighth in steals with a 2.1 average and scored 7.4 points per contest.
Cecka finished fifth in the league in rebounding with a 6.7 average. She averaged 7.4 points, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
The Panthers’ other all-conference selections as voted by the EWC coaches are Kaitlyn Hoffmann, a 5- 10 junior guard, and Chrissy Perl, a 6-1 junior center – both honorable mention.
Hoffmann ranked third in the EWC in steals at 2.5 per contest, fifth in three-point goals with 18 and 10th in scoring with a 9.9 average. She contributed 1.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Perl averaged 5.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
Panther head coach Brad Shutter commented on each of his All-EWC players.
“Nobody has a bigger heart or plays harder them Emily. She is a great defender and rebounder,” Shutter said.
“She is a very smart player. She was a great captain and leader.”
Shutter was most impressed with Cecka’s hustle and heart.
“You could not ask for a better point guard. She is a great ball handler with the ability to drive, shoot and post up,” Shutter said.
“She was our second-leading scorer and would have scored more if she was not unselfish to a fault. She played nearly every minute of every game this year.”
The coach said he was most impressed with Gumm’s ability to stay cool late in games on the free-throw line and handling the ball.
“I felt Kaitlyn should have been a second-team all-conference or maybe even a first-team all-conference selection,” Shutter said.
“She is a great shooter but also showed the ability to attack the rim as the season progressed.” Hoffmann’s athletic ability and her anticipation skills on defense stood out the most to Shutter.
“In the games versus Kiel at Kiel and Waupun at Plymouth, Chrissy was amazing,” the coach recalled.
Perl scored 17 points to lead PHS to a 50-30 win over Kiel. She had a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds to spark the Panthers past Waupun, 54-43.
“Chrissy has the ability to be player of the year [in the EWC] next year if she works hard this summer to improve in the areas she needs to,” Shutter said.
He said Perl’s ability to dominate games when she put her mind to it impressed him the most.
Senior center Becca Diederich of Two Rivers was voted the EWC’s “Player of the Year” by the coaches. Diedrich led the league in scoring with a 16.3 average and rebounding, 11.6 per contest. She finished second in field-goal accuracy with 54.3 percent.
Diedrich was named to the first team for the third consecutive year. The other first-team repeater is senior forward Lauren Carman of Sheboygan Falls. Carman ranked second in scoring with a 13.6 average and third in rebounding at 9.8 per game.
Leroy Hamilton of Sheboygan Falls and Kewaskum’s Mike Kleinhans were voted “Co-Coaches of the Year” in the conference by their peers. Hamilton directed the Falcons to the EWC title with a 13-1 record. Kleinhans’ squad placed second at 11-3.
