PIC support
To the Editor:
Recently the city of Plymouth considered a proposal from the Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition (PIC) to support their capital campaign and we thank them for their support to the project of $25,000 and the waiver to not run the water lines to the north-most property line, that will save them an additional $20,000, but we have to admit we were and are disappointed.
This project has received incredible support from the community. It is a project that helps more people in our community than any other project we can think of in recent history by supporting kids, families and seniors while also offering the community as a whole a community center. They have received incredible financial support by raising over $3.3 million in seven months, in one of the hardest economic times in our country’s history. The community has come out in force to support benefits to support PIC, too.
On March 12, Culver’s in Plymouth hosted a fundraiser for the Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition, donating 10 percent of all proceeds to PIC. They had a record-breaking crowd in attendance that night. That same weekend a sheepshead tournament was hosted for PIC at Racers Hall, and the organizer again said he had a record turnout. Earlier in the month the Plymouth Care Center held a chili dinner to benefit PIC and raised over $1,000 with a record turnout again. All three of these groups were expecting support but couldn’t believe how strongly the community came out.
This past Saturday, March 20, the Community Fund Raisers for PIC hosted “Rock for Generations” at Amore, with all proceeds going to PIC. Even though the night selected had numerous other things going on, not the least of which was vacationing on spring break, there was a crowd of over 200 people. People who were leaving for Spring Break or who had other commitments even took the time to send in donations for PIC. Once again the community showed their support to make the Plymouth Intergenerational Center a reality.
We believe this support and the donations from the numerous community members and businesses demonstrate how important this project is to the taxpayers of Plymouth, and we urge our City Council to see if there could be any way that they could support the project in a stronger way without raising taxes.
We realize that the support given to the LTC collaboration at the school is within the TIF district and so allows other moneys to be used than the city has access to for support to PIC. We also realize that prior agreements to purchase land cannot be changed now without legal risks to the city. But we wanted to let the city know that – this project is very important to us – equally as important as supporting the LTC venture and getting a new Plymouth Utility building, and if there is anything the city could do to show similar support for this project, we are all for it!
