Best in class lilies

Students in Marilyn Hahn’s “”Floriculture and Greenhouse Management” class at Plymouth High School raised a lovely crop of Easter lilies this semester.

The class usually is held in the fall, when students raise poinsettias. Easter lilies are difficult to grow, Hahn said. In January, students had to count leaves and use an equation to determine the optimum daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Each student raised two plants. Students had to wrap the pots in foil paper, as florist would, before taking them home March 19.

In grading the plants, Hahn looked for tight bulbs, no insects and a height of 18 to 21 inches.
