Falcons drop soggy opener

by Steve Ottman Falls News correspondent

The Sheboygan Falls Falcons girls softball season opener turned into a soggy 8-1 loss to the Sheboygan South Redwings. The game was called after three innings after a steady rain made the field unplayable.

The weather wasn’t fit for the birds, but the two teams sporting bird logos wanted to play despite the rain, wind and wet conditions.

South scored four times in the first inning as Falcons pitcher Elizabeth Barthels struggled with her command, allowing a couple of walks.

Falls made 4-1 in the bottom of the inning when they loaded the bases and sophomore Hayley Fenner cracked a deep sacrifice fly to score sophomore Theresa Lorenz from third base. Barthels also singled in the inning.

After the Redwings made it 8-1, their defense held off another Falcon rally in the bottom of the third inning, leaving two runners on base.

The Redwings’ Emily Crnekly scored two runs.

Barthels finished with two strikeouts, four hits, four walks and four earned runs.

“Overall I was pleased with the defense,” said Falcons coach Brian Beeck. “We had some passed balls that hurts us after runners got on base.”

Beeck felt that it was definitely a tough way to start, but the team played hard and made some definite improvements from last season.

Because the game was called, it would not count as a win or loss.
