FOND DU LAC — The Sheboygan Falls Falcons tied with St. Mary’s Springs for first place at the Fond du Lac Center Court Invite Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10, to open the boys tennis season.
Falls scored 16 points along with St. Mary’s to take first. Howards Grove took third with 10 points and Port Washington had seven.
Springs led after Friday’s doubles matches, but the Falcons rallied in the singles matches on Saturday.
Falls had champions at no.3 doubles (Russell Preder/Doug Arpke), no. 3 singles (Adam Lorenz) and no. 4 singles (Dustin Schueffner).
The Falcons were playing with a makeshift lineup due to five players missing for a school band trip.
“I was very pleased with the play of this team, especially the champions,” said Cherveny. “Preder, Arpke, Lorenz and Schueffner have never played varsity matches.”
Peter Bimmel won a match at no.2 singles and the no. 2 doubles team of Karl Huberty and Mitch Thimmig took second place. Ricky Haase also earned points at no.1 singles.
“We will still have a number of players gone this week, but will have to work it out with our line-up we have,” remarked Cherveny. “We should get a better idea of where some players will play and idea of where others are likely to play.”
