Barthels tosses first career no-hitter

Sheboygan Falls Falcons junior pitcher Elizabeth Barthels tossed her first career no-hitter as the Falcons shutout Milwaukee Bay View 15-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, April 16.

Barthels faced one batter over the minimum in five-inning run-rule game, striking out 10 batters with one walk and a hit batter.

In the second game, freshman Mollie Leffin pitched a one-hitter for her first career win. Leffin struck out six batters and walked three. Amira Shircel scored three runs.

The Falcons raised their record to 2-3 overall for the season.

“It was good to get two wins, even though I felt we could have picked up some more hits,” said Falcons coach Brian Beeck. “Their pitcher walked a lot of runners and we were able to score a lot of runs.”

The Kewaskum Indians run-ruled Falls 13-2 on Thursday, April 15. The Indians finished the game up with nine runs in the last three innings. Eric Heberer struck out six batters and walked three. Heberer also scored three runs.

Sophomore Brittany Lofton hit a double and senior Allie Salm stole home to lead the Falcons.

Falls drops to 0-3 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.

The Waupun Warriors swept a double hitter from the Falcons 14-1 and 11-0 on Tuesday, April 13 to open the EWC softball season.

Warriors Demi Kastein scored four runs in the first game and Cyan Scheer had five RBI’s with a double and a triple.

Salm had a base hit and scored a run for Falls. Barthels took the loss in all three games. “We faced two tough teams to start the season,” remarked Beeck. “We obviously still have a lot of work to do to get our program to their level, but I feel we can d it.”
