Resorters notch key CLC win
CEDAR GROVE – A six-run outburst in the top of the fifth inning carried the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters past Oostburg, 12-10, in a key Central Lakeshore Conference softball game here Thursday afternoon.
Both teams were undefeated in CLC play coming into the contest. Elkhart upped its first-place record to 5-0 (5-3 overall). The Lady Dutch, the defending CLC champions, dropped to 2-1 in the league (4-3 overall).
Elkhart was down 7-6 going into the fifth. The Resorters cashed in on six walks and two Oostburg errors to tally six runs and take a 12-7 lead.
“It was a big win for us. We came back and never gave up. The girls did a good job,” said Resorter head coach Keith Knepfel.
“It was a very good team effort. The girls stuck together.”
Freshman Emily Grunewald and senior Katelyn Winkel led the Resorters’ attack with two hits each. Winkel and freshman Charity Rodriguez had a team-high two RBIs apiece.
Grunewald and Rodriguez paced Elkhart in runs with three each. Winkel also walked three times. Grunewald had a team-best two stolen bases.
Knepfel thought junior pitcher Abbey Neils battled well through a twisted ankle, sustained in the game, as she went the distance to earn the win. Neils allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.
Starting hurler Julie Raeder took the loss – giving up nine runs (six earned) on five hits with three whiffs and five walks. Oostburg pitching allowed 11 free passes.
Raeder and Morgan Mullikin sparked Oostburg’s bats with three hits each. Raeder scored a team-high two runs and Mullikin led in RBIs with two.
