Boys tennis team continues hot streak
KEWASKUM – The Sheboygan Falls Falcons boys tennis team is off to its best start in five years, after improving to 4-0 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (5-0 overall), with a 7-0 shutout over Kewaskum Thursday, April 29, and a big 4-3 win over Kohler Tuesday, April 27.
Overall, the Falcons are in third place in the EWC, just three points behind Plymouth and Manitowoc Roncalli. Falls plays both of the top conference foes this week in their biggest tests so far this season.
“I’m really pleased with our progress,” said Falcons coach Leigh Cherveny. “If you would have asked me if this was possible, I couldn’t have predicted it. It’s been fun so far.”
The Falcons shut down Kewaskum in very windy conditions.
Senior Ricky Haase recorded a strong win in No. 1 singles, while No. 2 singles player Peter Bimmel earned a comeback win. Junior Baylor Bachmann and sophomore Dustin Schueffner had consistent wins in No. 3 and No. 4 singles action.
In the Kohler match, Falls was able to grind out a victory over the Blue Bombers for the first time in several years.
“Kohler has had our number for a few years,” Cherveny commented. “Kohler was playing with a skilled team, but I feel our experience took over.”
The Falcons won in part due to the strong play of Bachmann and Schueffner at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams of Adam Lorenz and Karl Huberty and David Bimmel and Doug Arpke) also scored impressive victories.
Falls won a total of 48 games to Kohler’s 15.
“This team has matured well so far and the depth has been a plus we haven’t had in other years,” Cherveny remarked.
Falls took on Plymouth Tuesday and will travel to Manitowoc Roncalli this Thursday, May 6. The Falcons will complete the week at the Watertown Invitational on Saturday, May 8.
