Sheboygan Falls High School senior Nathan Brown has been selected to receive a 2010 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 2 Scholar Athlete Award.
Brown was honored, along with 16 boys and 16 girls, at a WIAA Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony Sunday, May 2, at the Westwood Conference Center in Wausau.
Every year, each WIAA-member high school in the state is invited to nominate one boy and one girl for the Scholar Athlete Award. There were 726 nominations (361 boys, 365 girls) from 386 schools for the 2010 award.
To qualify for the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award, a student must have earned at least four varsity letters, through the first half of his or her senior year, and must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
This year’s nominees in four WIAA categories, includes 184 students from 96 Division 1 schools, 195 students from 101 Division 2 schools, 193 students from 103 Division 3 schools and 154 students from 86 Division 4 schools.
A total of 796 young men and women have earned the award, since the program was launched in 1984 to honor scholastic and athletic excellence.
At the awards ceremony, Brown received a medallion and certificate, along with a special plaque to be displayed in the SFHS trophy case.
During his four years at SFHS, Brown has compiled a 4.0 grade-point average and lettered in 11 sports, including four letters in soccer, four in wrestling and three in tennis.
He has earned nine individual championships in wrestling, including three EWC titles, four regional titles and two sectional titles. Brown was also a first-team All-EWC selection in 2009.
Brown was required to write an essay as part of the nomination process.
In the essay he wrote, “Much of who I have become throughout high school can be accredited to my participation in athletics. Participating in multiple sports has molded my character and has helped me develop leadership and goal-setting skills. I also learned that to be an effective leader it is important to recognize that everyone on the team plays a valuable part in the process of obtaining success.”
Brown plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall to major in physical therapy. He is also planning to join the Badgers wrestling team.
