Flames win season debut

PLYMOUTH – A 13-hit attack sparked the Plymouth Flames to an 8-7 win over Johnsburg in their baseball season opener Saturday afternoon at Loebe Field.

The Flames scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a squeeze bunt by Travis Christenson that brought home Chris Bennin. Christenson was also the winning pitcher in relief.

Justin Gephart’s four hits keyed the Flames’ bats. Butch Cain added three hits.

In another nonleague contest, the Flames lost to the visiting Two Rivers Polar Bears, 7-3, Sunday afternoon. The Bears erupted for six runs in the ninth.

Plymouth had only five hits, led by Gephart and Eric Heidenreiter with two each. Nick Wilson took the loss in relief.
