Recognizing depression In children, a free program

A free educational program on depression in children is being offered by Mental Health America in cooperation with Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin-Sheboygan.

Dr. Karl Riem, a retired pediatric psychologist, along with Children’s Service Society will present the program Children and Depression. It will take place from 7-8 p.m., Monday, May 24, at the United Way building, 2020 Erie Ave. in Sheboygan and will provide participants with information about how depression affects children. Phone reservations are appreciated and can be made by calling (920) 458-3951.

Depression occurs in 1 percent of preschoolers, 2 percent of school-aged children, and 8 percent of adolescents. It is important for parents/guardians to know that depression in children does not present itself in the same manner as depression in adults.

If parents/guardians have further concerns related to depression in their child, they are encouraged to make an appointment for a free depression screening for children and adolescents on Wednesday, May 26. Children’s Services Society will be screening children ages 8-17 from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. To schedule your child for a free half-hour appointment call (920) 458-5062.
