Riverview student 2nd in county writing contest

Alivia Houdek, a sixth-grader at Riverview Middle School in Plymouth, recently won second place in a countywide writing contest.

The fifth annual Write Stuff Writers Contest was open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in Sheboygan County. More than 400 middle-school students entered the contest, sponsored by The Sheboygan Press and the Sheboygan County Writers Club.

The contest theme was “If I Couldn't Be Me, I Would Like to Be ...” Alivia's essay, titled “Wild at Heart,” beautifully described her decision to be a wolf.

The judges, members of the writers club, said they were very impressed with Alivia's writing. “We couldn't believe a sixth grader actually wrote it,” they said, adding that a piece that well-written is usually done so by an older student.

Alivia, whose teacher is Connie Mertens, was awarded a certificate and a $50 gift card to Walmart.
