Walsh’s strong pitching keys Flames’ LOL win
Evan Walsh fanned 10 batters and allowed only two hits in seven innings as he pitched the Plymouth Flames to a 6-1 victory over visiting Thiensville-Mequon Sunday afternoon.
The Flames improved to 1-1 in the Land O’ Lakes Baseball League Northern Division (2-3 overall). The game was the division opener for the Twins.
Walsh allowed one earned run and walked five. Ryan Wachter pitched two scoreless innings in relief – surrendering two hits and no walks with one strikeout.
The Flames scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie. Plymouth bunched together four walks, two hits and one Twin error. Paul Gloede and Mike DuCharme contributed one RBI single each.
“It was a very nice game for us. Evan did a nice job. He threw the ball hard and mixed it up,” said Flame player-manager Rick Meyer.
“Ryan did a nice job in relief. Dave Stecker made some nice plays at shortstop. Chris Bennin hit the ball well.
“This was our best overall game of the season,” Meyer said.
The Flames had nine hits and played errorless defense. Bennin was 3-for-3 with two RBIs to key the Flames’ bats. Bennin’s RBI double gave Plymouth a 1-0 lead in the first. Justin Gephart collected two hits.
Graham Garland took the loss in relief. Garland gave up four runs (three earned) on zero hits with four walks and no strikeouts as he failed to retire a batter after starting the seventh.
BRANCH GAME
In nonleague play Saturday afternoon, the Flames lost to the host Branch Blaze, 8-3. The Blaze scored five runs in the fifth on four hits and two Plymouth errors to seize a 5-0 lead.
DuCharme paced the Flames in hits with two. Walsh, Jason Malstrand and Dave Albrecht had one RBI each.
Dan Novak had a team-high three hits for Branch. Travis Christenson was the starting and losing pitcher. He gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 6-1/3 frames.
