Lucky seven for Panthers’ EWC golf streak
FOND DU LAC – An excellent team effort ignited the Plymouth boys golf team to victory in Wednesday’s Eastern Wisconsin Conference 18-hole tournament Wednesday at the Whispering Springs Golf Course.
The first-place showing wrapped up an outstanding seventh straight overall EWC crown for the Panthers. PHS ran away with the title as it scored 16 points (mini-meets and tourney combined). Kiel took second with 24.
PHS shot a season-low 307 for 18-holes at the conference finale. Junior Geno Kiela continued his stellar season with a runner-up finish. Senior Brandon Gries of Kiel was the medalist – winning a scorecard tiebreaker with Kiela and Sheboygan Falls freshman Chris Bachmann.
Kiela, Gries and Bachmann each shot 1-over-par 73s. Bachmann carried Falls to a second-place effort with a 314 total.
The Panthers’ other low players were freshman Tyler Siech with a 77, junior Marcus Gamoke, 78 and senior Jon Criter with a 79.
“We had a great conference meet,” said PHS head coach Dan Knaus. “Geno was our leader like he has been all season and was named the “Player of the Year” in the conference.
“The rest of the team really stepped up. Tyler had his best varsity meet of his season.
“Marcus and Jon both improved on their season averages as well. It was just an all-around outstanding performace by the team,” Knaus said.
Kiel’s Derek Meyer scored an ace on the par-3, 117-yard third hole.
