LTC dedicates model crane

Sen. Joe Leibham, Manitowoc Cranes Vice President of Operations Steve Brahm, Lakeshore Technical College President Mike Lanser, members of the LTC Board and LTC Foundation Board, and apprentices prepare to cut the ribbon Monday on a model Manitowoc Crane that was built by apprentices and erected on LTC’s Cleveland campus as a symbol of apprenticeship and the strong partnership between industry and technical educators.

“This crane is a symbol of our long relationship with The Manitowoc Company and the community. It also is a symbol of apprenticeship and the American worker,” Lanser said during the dedication ceremony. “We will display this crane as a lasting tribute to apprenticeship, a testament to the strong work ethic of the people of this area, and to show the impact the Manitowoc Company has had on our community.”

The 40-foot, lattice-boom crawler crane is one-eighth the size of a Model 18000 and was built entirely by apprentices through LTC’s fabrication apprenticeship program. The pedestal that displays the crane was built by carpentry and mason apprentices, and the wind turbine blade held by the crane was designed by mechanical design students.
