Elkhart’s Lubach wins Grand National

PLYMOUTH – Warm and sunny weather welcomed the fans to the Sheboygan County Fair Park Saturday for Plymouth Dirt Track Racing’s Military Night.

Following recognition of veterans who were in attendance, and a program presented by personnel form the American Legion and VFW, the green flag waved.

The A-Main winners were Brian Kristan (Zion, Ill.) in the Sprints, Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) Late Models; Kevin Lubach (Elkhart Lake), Grand Nationals; and Tim Simon, Outlaw Compacts.

Kristan, after starting eighth, led only four laps but they came late in the race. Earl Possi (Rock, Mich.) passed Jim Melis (Glenbuelah) on lap 10 and led until Kristan passed him with Kurt Davis (West Allis) close behind.

Possi and Davis raced hard to the end with Lance Fassbender (Burnett) and Ken Jay Fiedler (Sheboygan Falls) completing the top five.

Jason Johnson (Campbellsport) won the B-main with heat race wins going to Fassbender, Possi, Brian Portschy (Plymouth) and Melis.

The B-main went under red twice with cars flipping. Danny Schlafer (Sussex) and Erin Winscher (Sheboygan Falls) flipped in a multi-car crash, and later Tim Haddy (Waupun) escaped injury in a flip.

Scheffler continued his fine season – winning the Late Model race with Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls) chasing him every lap. After a pair of early cautions, the race stayed green to the finish.

Bill Rezutek (Big Bend) was third after starting in the fifth row. Several times the leaders ran in lapped traffic but Scheffler always found the quick way through – denying Schueffner a chance to pass.

Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) was third and Turk Letizia (Milwaukee) fifth. Chris Carlson (Union Grove) won the B-main and heat wins went to Brett Sievert (Mukwanago), Dan Dippel (Plymouth) and Letizia.

Lubach's win was his first in the Grand National Division. He was challenged repeatedly by Mark Fieber (Cascade) and his older brother, Brad (Elkhart Lake). Brian Gilles (Plymouth) came from the fifth row and battled Tim Werner (Malone) and later Fieber to finish third.

Heat race winners were Bret Wenzel (Manitowoc), Luke Scholten (Oostburg) and Werner.

The 15-lap Outlaw Compact race went to Simon after he passed Joe Miller (Plymouth) on lap 13. Simon, who has won more races in the Compact class than any driver, also took the season points lead with his win.

Aaron Stolp (West Allis) and Travis Arenz (Sheboygan) were second and third, respectively, with Miller finishing fourth and Andy Singer (Cascade), fifth. Glen Blanke (Sheboygan Falls) was sixth after challenging the leaders for many laps.

The race was highlighted by three-wide racing at times and stayed green most of the event. Heats were won by Stolp, Sean Mueller (Plymouth) and Simon.

Racers Bar East of Plymouth contributed bonus money to all A-main winners.
