High-speed Superbike action returns to Road America
ELKHART LAKE – The Suzuki SuperBike Doubleheader returns to Road America, Thursday, June 3, through Sunday.
Thousands of two-wheel enthusiasts gather to watch riders claim the fastest times of the AMA Pro Road Racing Series season. This year's event is a triple doubleheader with a two-race format for AMA Pro National Guard American SuperBike, AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL, and AMA Pro SuperSport.
Single races will also be held for the new AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series and TTXGP, providing a nonstop schedule of one of the world's most intense and unpredictable forms of motorsports.
The premier and highly competitive American SuperBike class maximizes the track's opportunities for speed and passing. These 200-horsepower (hp) cycles reach speeds of 195 mph, and hit 60 mph in less than three seconds. Current American Superbike point leaders are Jake Zemke, Tommy Hayden and Josh Hayes.
Daytona SportBikes at 120-145 hp, reach 175 mph; current point leaders are Danny Eslick, Josh Herrin and Martin Cardenas. The SuperSport class is for riders aged 16-21, and provides competition-level road racing for emerging two-wheel talent.
The inaugural AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series race will take place on Sunday. This new spec series featuring Vance & Hines modified Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles will once again provide enthusiasts the opportunity to race the iconic brand in a road-racing format.
Also on Sunday is the TTXGP series for zero-carbon, clean emission electric race bikes. These bikes look similar to road racing bikes, but are powered by batteries and electric motors instead of internal combustion engines.
On Saturday and Sunday officials will open the grid to fans, allowing them to mingle with riders and teams during pre-race festivities. Ceremonies will feature a color guard provided by the Wisconsin Army National Guard and live vocal presentations of the National Anthem.
Other two-wheel action includes shows by stunt rider Jason Britton, trial exhibitions by AMA/NATC Champion Patrick Smage, and a front-straight drag race demo. Fans can ride their own motorcycles on the legendary track by participating in the Salute to Cycles Friday-Sunday.
Concession karting is available all weekend, and on Saturday evening the track will host MMA Cage Fights with an appearance by Fox Cityz Foxz.
In conjunction with the AMA Suzuki SuperBike Doubleheader, Road America will officially open its new Orion Tech Center with a Friday afternoon ribbon cutting. Orion Energy Systems, a Wisconsin-based powertechnology enterprise, developed the center's energy management system, which is designed to automatically replace electrical lighting in the building with daylight for a significant portion of the day.
Gates open at 7 a.m. and races run rain or shine. For more information, visit www.roadamerica.com or call 800-365-RACE (7223).
