Summer means fun around here

WITH MEMORIAL DAY BEHIND us, we can now officially start summer.

The season may not officially begin, according to the calendar, for another two weeks, but the weather and activities say otherwise.

The whirl of summer activities has begun and there’s plenty out there for everyone to keep busy this summer.

There’s the usual array of festivals and picnics, in just about every town, village and city across the county, big or small. Whether it’s music, food, games, bargain shopping — or all of the above — you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it somewhere in Sheboygan County any and every weekend for the next three months.

We’re also blessed, of course, with an abundance of natural splendor for those who want to enjoy the world around them. From the Lake Michigan shore to the rolling foothills of the Kettle Moraine, the call of nature is easily answered anywhere in Sheboygan County. Whether you enjoy a quiet hike in the woods, splashing in refreshing lake water or just taking in the scenery, opportunities abound.

If you like big-time events and want to be able to boast to friends that you were there when it happened, there are chances for that this summer as well. In addition to the usual array of racing events at Road America, this summer will see the return of NASCAR racing to the track in Elkhart Lake, the first time in decades that this popular series has visited Sheboygan County. It promises to be a remarkable and memorable event, and The Review will mark its arrival with a special free 12-page NASCAR Road America publication that will be on newsstands starting this weekend.

Then there’s also the return of the PGA Championship to Whistling Straits Golf Course in Haven in August. The best of the professional golf world were here six years ago for the PGA and produced an event that people are still talking about. The chance to be part of the next golf major to touch down in Sheboygan County is still available for those who want to watch top level golf in a picturesque setting on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan.

For those with an artistic or entertainment bent, there’s plenty of art and shows throughout the summer as well, whether it’s the Plymouth Arts Festival or the Mill Street Guild’s “Mill Street Live” shows at the Plymouth Arts Center, the always-popular Summer Concerts in City Park series (including the annual German Night), or lively shows and live music at the resorts in Elkhart Lake, great art and great entertainment is never too far away.

There are also sports and recreational activities galore throughout the city and county, whether your interest is in participating or just watching.

It all adds up to the usual blend of summer fun and activity that Sheboygan County offers each and every year. Go out and enjoy!
