LTC’s new Fire Medic program to cross-train firefighter-paramedics

Responding to industry needs for cross-trained firefighter-paramedics, Lakeshore Technical College is introducing a new Fire Medic associate degree program this fall.

The program was designed to meet the specific training needs of municipal fire departments and other emergency response organizations. Fifteen new students will be accepted each year into the program, which is nearly full for fall 2010.

“Because ambulances are occasionally delayed at hospitals, fire service personnel typically can respond and be the first to deliver on-scene care in an emergency,” said LTC EMS, Fire and Emergency Management Coordinator Ryan Skabroud. “Municipal fire departments are looking for workers who are skilled in both firefighting and paramedic techniques so they can be prepared to respond to a variety of incidents.”

Courses within the Fire Medic curriculum focus on preparing a firefighter-paramedic for entry-level employment with a full-time municipal fire department or other emergency response organization in the public or private sector. Students will train on the state-of-the-art LTC Driving Skills Course with the help of a new fire truck and ambulance.

The program also prepares students to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam for Paramedic, and state certification exams for Firefighter I and II, Fire Inspector I, and Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator.

Along with the Fire Medic associate degree, LTC’s public safety division offers a Paramedic Technician associate degree program and an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic technical diploma program. The Fire Protection Technician associate degree program, which operated through a shared agreement with Fox Valley Technical College, is no longer available.
