ETHEL J. HOLBROOK

Ethel J. Holbrook, age 84, formerly of 633 E. Main St., Plymouth, passed away early Friday morning, June 11, 2010, at Libby’s House in Plymouth where she was a resident for the last two and one-half years.

She was born April 23, 1926 in the town of Sheboygan Falls, a daughter of the late Frank G. and Jessie Hopkins Ubbelohde.

On Oct. 5, 1946, she married John W. Holbrook in the town of Sheboygan Falls. The couple resided in Greenbush, Glenbeulah and Plymouth.

She attended John’s Grade School in the town of Sheboygan Falls and graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School in 1944 and Sheboygan County Vocational School in 1945.

She worked at the Sheboygan Falls High School office from 1943-46. After her children were grown, she worked at Heberlein Pharmacy, Plymouth Family Restaurant, co-managed the Nook Restaurant at the Valley View Hospital, and cooked for the Sheboygan County Fair kitchen retiring in 2002.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Plymouth and served her church in many different roles, including the Mary Martha Chapter where at one time or another she held all the offices in the organization. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship, secretary of the Dorcas Chapter and served many funeral luncheons too numerous to count.

Ethel was a former member of the Plymouth Women’s Club and worked at the Plymouth Food Pantry for many years and served as a director.

She also was a member of the Plymouth Art Foundation, the Sheboygan County Interfaith Organization and the Plymouth Historical Society.

Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, John of Plymouth; three daughters: Mary Ellen (William) Kirchberg of Columbus, Wis.; Sarah Jane (Larry) Behr of Plymouth and Barbara Ann Holbrook (Katherine Romme) of St. Paul, Minn.; two sons, Russell Lee (Judy) Holbrook of Geneva, Ill., and Dr. Peter Holbrook (Tom Hoffman) of Milwaukee; nine grandchildren: Gregory (Becky) Kirchberg of Columbus, Wis.; Kimberly (Jerry) Lafler of Beaver Dam, Wis.; Brian Kirchberg (Terri Theisen) of DeForest, Wis.; Jennifer (Chris) Lund of Plymouth; Michael (Torie) Behr of Plymouth; Alyssa and Lindsay Holbrook of Geneva, Ill.; Sara (David) Sortino of Milwaukee and Rachel VanLiere of Milwaukee; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie LaFountain of Florida and Marilyn (Glendale) DeBruine of Plymouth; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Ubbelohde of Cottage Grove, Wis., and Bernice Ubbelohde of Sheboygan Falls; and three brothers-in-law: William (Lucille) Wick of New York, Donald (Lorraine) Holbrook of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and David Holbrook of DuFuniak Springs, Fla. Ethel is also survived by many nieces, nephew, other relatives and many friends including special friends: Dr. Mary Arenberg and Dr. George Schroeder and their children, Carl and Emma Schroeder, all of Plymouth.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, David, Donald and Willard Ubbelohde; two sisters, Jeannette Wick and Ruth Dean; and two brothers-in-law, Thurston LaFountain and James Lea Dean.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Plymouth. Pastor Rae Ann Beebe will officiate. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Plymouth Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in support of the Plymouth Historical Society, Plymouth Art Foundation or the Sharon S. Richardson Hospice Program.
