Elder abuse

To the Editor:

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. When I googled the date of June 15, 2010, it came up with 97 pages of information relating to that day! It’s hard to believe that one day can be so busy.

Did you already know that June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day? Probably not, because elder abuse is not something one wants to think about or talk about. But it does happen and it happens in Sheboygan County.

Elder abuse happens to both men and women and isn't always something you can see. Elder abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual, financial, neglect and self-neglect. If you are a victim of elder abuse, please be aware that there is help and support for you. Reach out! You do not have to go through this alone.

If you think you know someone who is being abused, be supportive and talk to them. Whatever the circumstances there is help and support available by calling Safe Harbor at (920) 452-7640 – 24/7; or the Sheboygan County Aging and Disability Resource Center at (920) 467-4100. All calls are confidential.

Everyone – please take one minute out of your busy life Tuesday, June 15, and reflect on the reality that at that particular moment an elder, somewhere in the world or in Sheboygan County, could be being abused.
