Resorters knocked out of CLC lead

ELKHART LAKE – The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters suffered their second straight tough loss, 5- 4, against Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler here Wednesday night.

The loss dropped the Resorters out of a share of the Central Lakeshore Conference baseball lead. Elkhart, Oostburg and Lutheran/Kohler are tied for second at 3-2 – one game behind Howards Grove, 4-1 (through Wednesday’s games).

Lutheran/Kohler tallied two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Dane Poth knocked in the first run when Elkhart was unable to turn a double play that would’ve ended the inning. The second baseman bobbled the ball on the grounder and was only able to get a forceout at second.

Christian Ertel followed with an RBI single that gave the Crusaders a 5-3 lead. An error on a sacrifice bunt that allowed the batter to reach first helped lead to an unearned run by the Crusaders.

The Resorters pulled to within 5-4 in the seventh but stranded runners at first and third. Myles Galloway walked with one out and took second when Dane Blake followed with a single.

One out later, Deric Lightle drove in Galloway with an RBI single that advanced Blake to third. Kyle Rentmeester batted next and hit into a fielder’s choice that ended the contest.

“Anytime you lose a one-run game, you think about the little things you didn’t do. It’s always disappointing when you lose,” said Resorter head coach Davin Hill whose team slipped to 3-7 overall.

The Resorters lost their previous game, 3-2, at Oostburg June 14.

“Lutheran played better overall than we did. Credit to Jacob Kanz [winning pitcher]. He walked only three and his curveball was very effective and it kept our hitters off balance,” Hill said.

“We didn’t have enough production up and down the lineup.”

Blake and Lightle combined for six of Elkhart’s seven hits with three each. Blake had a team-high two RBIs.

Elkhart tied the game, 3-3, with a pair of runs in the fourth but missed an opportunity to take the lead. Josh Schneider led off with a single, followed by walks to Ben Rentmeester and Delaine Goodell that loaded the bases.

Galloway hit into a fielder’s choice in which a runner was forced out at home. Blake then delivered a two-run single. Travis Kosnicki followed with a lineout to the second baseman. The inning ended when a runner was picked off second.

The Resorters tallied their first run in the second when Lightle singled and later scored on an infield error.

Kanz pitched a complete game – allowing four runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out six.

Blake took the loss and went the distance. The senior surrendered two earned runs on seven hits with four walks, a hit batter and seven whiffs.

“Dane pitched well enough to win. He kept his composure and had pop on his fastball,” Hill observed. Ertel, Nick Tesmer and Kanz paced the Crusaders in hits with two apiece. Poth and Ertel had a teamhigh two RBIs each.
