Golf team completes solid campaign

The 2010 season proved to be highly successful for the Sheboygan Falls High School golf team.

The Falcons had a second-place finish at the Eastern Wisconsin Conference Tournament and placed third in conference overall.

Falls also won the Sheboygan County Golf Championship and collected it’s first ever victory in the EWC Mini-Tour series, since the format began 10 years ago.

The Falcons racked up a second-place finish at The Bull in a 16-team multi-division invite. It also notched a second-place showing in WIAA regional competition to advance to sectional play. Aaron Krueger and Chris Bachmann earned spots on the first team All-EWC unit. “We had more players on the first team than any other conference team,” said Falcons coach Phil Marr.

The only sub-par team performance of the year was a ninth-place finish at the sectional competition.

“Each team member was very disappointed with his score on a course that they had played at least twice during the year,” stated Marr. “Progressing as a team to the state competition is always a goal, but this year we had a definite possibility.

“But again, I believe that the team’s lack of experience at that level of competition was a major factor in the final ninth-place finish.”

This year’s Falcons had plenty of youth. The squad returned three lettermen from last year, but just one was a senior. After numerous playoffs among many team members, two freshmen were promoted to the varsity level.

The varsity team for the season included two freshmen, a sophomore, a junior and a senior.

Three other team members competed at the varsity level during the year. Each player is capable of filling the open varsity slot next season.

This year proved to be a learning experience for all of the members of the team. Next year’s team has the potential to compete for the EWC championship and to progress even further in playoff competition.

“With five returning lettermen and a couple others who could add to the team’s potential, it could be a very good year,” stated Marr.

The Falcons golf team won the Sheboygan County Invitational to start the season, after taking second place at a multi-division 16-team invite at The Bull earlier in the week.

Then Falls took second at the first EWC Mini-Meet at The Bull and wound up fifth in another one at Campbellsport.

The following week, the Falcons finished sixth at New Holstein and fourth at Plymouth to drop to fourth in the standings.

Falls came in third at the Wiese Invitational and won a triangular meet at Random Lake. The squad also tallied a fourth-place showing at Kiel and fifth at Waupun

The Falcons finished the season with a second-place finish at the EWC Tournament. The Falls squad also recorded runner-up showing at the regional tournament to qualify for sectional play, where it wound up ninth overall.
