A Kid’s Day on the Farm at SUNSEED
Nolan Schwingle joined young people from Milwaukee, Plymouth, Mt. Calvary and Ohio who gathered at SUNSEED Eco-Education Center in Mount Calvary on June 16 to enjoy “A Kid’s day on the Farm.”
The children explored the gardens and helped harvest part of their lunch, including asparagus, peas, lettuce, salad turnips, kohlrabi and strawberries. The children were encouraged to taste all the veggies, even if they had never heard of them – what couldn’t be eaten would be food for the pigs or chickens. Eco- Education Center staff considered it a compliment when one little girl exclaimed, “Wow, nothing goes to waste here.”
The children met honeybee pollinators and red wiggler composters and learned their important roles in the wonderful food web that keeps one healthy. Roasting marshmallows around a bonfire and enjoying s’mores and stories ended the day.
The next Kid’s Day is July 14 for grades four and five. Visit: www.sustainfdlcounty.org to view the flier or contact Sister Mary Ann: msrnka@ssnd-milw.org, 920-753-2131 to register or for more information. SUNSEED Eco-Education Center is located at 110 Notre Dame St., Mount Calvary.
