JEAN GORROW EVERS
Jean Gorrow Evers, formerly a resident of Riverview Drive in Plymouth, died at Rocky Knoll Health Care Center last Wednesday evening, June 23, 2010, after a long illness. She was 90 years old and had been a resident of Rocky Knoll for the past seven years. Her husband, Dr. Raymond Evers, died four years ago, also at Rocky Knoll.
Jean was born in Seattle, Wash., on Oct. 8, 1919, and grew up in Kaukauna, Wis. She was the daughter and only child of Mark and Bernice Maas Gorrow. Her father was a boat captain who plied the rivers of eastern Wisconsin. She enjoyed telling about adventures on her father’s boat.
After high school, following the early deaths of both parents, she entered the Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago, where she graduated in the early 1940s. She then married Dr. Raymond Evers, who had recently graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School. The couple moved to Plymouth in 1950 when her husband became the medical director at Rocky Knoll, then a tuberculosis sanatorium.
In addition to raising her three sons, Jean especially loved to entertain, to play bridge, and to cook elaborate meals for her family and many friends. She also worked as a volunteer school nurse for the Plymouth School System in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, and helped set up the school nurse program. In the early ‘70 she and several friends helped open Country Crafts, the gift shop and restaurant that still operates southwest of Plymouth. She also helped found the Camus Center for the Humanities, an organization that encouraged learning and creative expression, especially for seniors and children.
Special mention should be made of her love of dogs. Until her final years, she usually cared for several dogs, and especially favored Irish setters. Her room at Rocky Knoll was filled with photographs of her dogs.
Jean is survived by her three sons: Michael (wife, Barbara Papish), of Beverly, Mass.; Mark (wife, Jeanne McGee), of Vancouver, Wash., and Tony (wife, Kathy Evers) of Madison, Wis.; seven grandchildren and by eight great-grandchildren.
A gathering to share memories and stories was held until 7 p.m. Monday, June 28, at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Refreshments and food were available at the gathering. Cremation has taken place.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Sheboygan County Humane Society at 3107 N. 20th St., Sheboygan, WI 53083.
