Gem is eyesore

To the Editor:

As anyone who drives past or tries to use the Mill Pond knows, it has become an eyesore. One method of trying to clean up the river and pond was tried but hasn't worked. Now we should use plan B or plan C if needed.

We have a new fishing pier, but no fish and the fishermen have left. We have a nice skating shack, but how can you ice skate with weeds growing through the ice? We have an island in the pond, but how can the Boy Scouts canoe there for their campouts? Because of the proliferation of weeds, you cannot even float a canoe or kayak on the east side of the island.

The Mill Pond is and has been a significant part of the beauty of Plymouth. It is used by many people from Plymouth as well as from out of town. We want to make Plymouth a place for people to come, visit, spend their money and enjoy. How can this be a welcome mat in the shape the Mill Pond is in?

People are signing a petition to have the weeds removed. People are planning to attend the City Council meetings. Let's all – concerned citizens, City Council members and city officials – do what we can, whatever it takes, to clean up the river and Mill Pond. Make it the beautiful gem of downtown Plymouth once again.
