Panthers fall to Kiel
PLYMOUTH – A nightmarish start buried the Plymouth Panthers who were unable to recover as they fell to Kiel, 11-5, in Eastern Wisconsin Conference baseball Thursday at the PHS diamond.
The Raiders cashed in on two PHS errors that opened the flood gates for an incredible 10-0 lead after one-half inning. All 10 runs were unearned because of the errors.
“It was a rough beginning. We dug ourselves too big of a hole,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.
“We definitely kept battling but didn’t get the two-out hits. We didn’t give up. The guys showed a lot of desire.”
The Panthers drew 10 walks and had seven hits but left 10 runners on base.
PHS slipped to 4-4 in the EWC (7-6 overall). The Raiders improved to 4-7 in the league (9-7 overall).
Kiel combined five singles, two hit batters and a pair of walks in the first. The key hit was a two-run single by Tyler Konz.
PHS tallied three runs in the bottom of the first. Jake Rathsack had an RBI double, Jake Klemme singled in a run and Tony Arnold hit a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers added one run in the fourth and one in the seventh. Greg Rhude had an RBI in the fourth on a fielder’s choice, and a wild pitch produced the run in the seventh.
A bright spot for PHS was freshman pitcher Ryan Schieble’s performance. Schieble relieved in the first and went the rest of the way – allowing one earned run on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 6- 1/3 innings.
Cain thought Schieble pitched well and did a good job of keeping the ball down. The coach said Rhude played well at shortstop.
Trevor Thiel and Klemme led the Panthers in hits with two each.
Derek Meyer and Konz paced the Raiders in hits with two apiece. Konz had a team-high two RBIs. Cody Retlich was the starting and winning pitcher. Retlich gave up four runs (all earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in four frames.
