Plymouth band offers patriotic theme in city park concert July 1

The Plymouth Municipal Band concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 1, in Plymouth City Park will feature a patriotic theme honoring the Independence Day holiday.

Concert selections include John Phillip Sousa’s composition “King Cotton,” a march written for the Cotton States and International Exposition, Atlanta in 1895. John Williams’ “Hymn To The Fallen” from the movie “Saving Private Ryan” is also on the program.

The concert will be special for a family of guest musicians, Eric and Denise DeZwarte Amweg and their son, Dexter, of Hazel Green. Eric and Denise met and were married after joining the Plymouth Municipal Band. Their marriage took place in Plymouth City Park and they have returned to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with the band.

Eric is a graduate of Elkhart Lake High School, Lakeland College as a music major, and is currently the band director at Southwestern High School.

Denise is a graduate of Plymouth High School and served as Municipal Band percussionist and president from 1982-85.

Dexter, a tuba player like his father, is a graduate of Iowa-Grant High School and attended Lakeland College.
