Four cars were involved in an accident on Interstate 43 and State 42, June 30 about 10:53 p.m., when a mattress flew off the top of a Ford Explorer driven by Steven B. Wideman, 36, of Manitowoc.

The car behind Wideman, driven by Sarah Kloepping, 21, of De Pere, Wideman’s girlfriend, slammed on her brakes to avoid the mattress causing items in her car to fly forward hitting her in the head. She was eventually treated at the scene and released.

A semi driven by William Jaggers, 50, of Kentucky was behind Kloepping. He slammed on his brakes to avoid vehicles that had slowed down, which caused him to jackknife his truck. He suffered an injury to his arm and was transported to St. Nicholas Hospital.

Behind Jaggers was James Leathham, 71, of Sister Bay. He swerved and braked to avoid the semi causing him to hit the mattress and slide into a bridge rail. His injuries were minor and did not require hospitalization.
