Flames explode past Port
PLYMOUTH – Two huge innings fueled the Plymouth Flames’ 12-6 win over Port Washington Wednesday night at Loebe Field.
The Flames did all their damage in the bottom of the third and fourth innings with seven and five runs, respectively. Ryan Wachter and Paul Gloede had a team-high three RBIs for Plymouth.
The Flames pounded out 13 hits, led by Evan Walsh with three. Wachter, Justin Gephart, Gloede and Travis Christenson contributed two apiece.
Plymouth upped their Land O’ Lakes Baseball League Northern Division record to 6-9 (7-13 overall). The Lakers fell to 9-6 in the division.
The Flames sent 10 batters to the plate in the third and the key hits were a two-run double by Walsh, which capped off the outburst, and two-RBI singles by Wachter and Gloede. Walsh started the frame with a single.
Six of the seven runs in the third were unearned due to an error on a sacrifice bunt.
Plymouth batted around in the fourth and collected five hits, led by Greg Rhude’s two-run single. Wachter laced an RBI double, Gephart drilled a run-producing triple and Gloede had an RBI single.
“We really hit the ball well. It was a fun game,” said Flame player-manager Rick Meyer.
“It was a very good win. Everyone up and down the lineup hit.”
Nick Wilson was the starting and winning pitcher. Wilson gave up five runs (all earned) on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 6-2/3 innings. He held the Lakers scoreless in the second through sixth frames.
Rhude, who pitched for the Plymouth High School team as a senior this past season, finished up the game strong for the Flames. He surrendered one unearned run on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 2-1/3 frames.
“Nick settled down well after the first. He did very well, threw strikes and had a good defense behind him,” Meyer noted.
“Greg threw strikes and threw hard.” Nick Heiting sparked the Lakers’ attack with three hits and three RBIs.
