The 2010 Sheboygan Falls Falcons girls tennis team looks to improve from last season’s fifth-place finish in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.

Falls completed the season 5-4 in the EWC and 11-4 overall. The team won the Falcon Invite and the Watertown triple duals. The No. 1 doubles team of Ashley Entringer and Brianna Nack qualified for the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament in Madison.

Head coach Sandy Cherveny is entering her 27th season as coach. Her husband Leigh will assist her for the first part of the season.

She feels that the team has some work to do, but likes how it is shaping up.

This year’s Falcons unit returns six varsity players. Junior MacKenzie Schnell will start in the No. 1 singles spot and last year’s singles players senior Jamie Kelling and Kelly Jo Hoffman also return.

“Schnell has worked very hard at her game this past summer,” Cherveny expressed.

Cherveny will have to replace the No. 1 singles and doubles teams, after losing Marissa Bartel, Entringer, Nack and No. 3 doubles player Hannah Hocevar to graduation

Returning doubles players are seniors Lilly Rotter, Erica Kruger and junior Michelle Schleevogt.

Newcomers include junior Libby Pribek, Ashley Meyer, Casssie Hammen, seniors Erin Moriearty, Sam Humphries and sophomores Dana Kluz and Abby Klescewski.

“A few positions are set, but we’re still molding the rest of the team,” said Cherveny. “We’ll be experimenting with several line-ups in the early part of the season. We may shift players from singles to doubles and so forth.”

Cherveny feels that this year’s numbers are down, but expects the team to finish in the top third of the EWC.

“Plymouth and Roncalli are always strong,” remarked Cherveny. “I feel that there will be strong competition after that.”

Cherveny likes the work ethic that Falcons captains Schnell and Rotter have installed in their teammates. “They’re starting the team off on the right foot,” Cherveny commented. The Falcons opened their season at the Kohler Invitational Tuesday, Aug. 17.
