Boys & Girls Club teams up with Nourish for farm tours
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sheboygan County is teaming up with Nourish Farm to Family Philanthropy to provide valuable experiences for Boys & Girls Club members.
Nourish, a program that fosters collaborative efforts between local farmers and volunteers, brings meals, inspired by fresh, locally grown ingredients, to struggling families.
The Boys & Girls Club members enjoy a whole day experience, beginning at one of the local farms participating in the program. The youth work alongside the farmers and learn about raising and harvesting fruits and vegetables.
Youth members get their hands dirty and assist with harvesting the vegetables needed for dinner. These vegetables are then taken to Safe Harbor where the youth are teamed up with a volunteer chef, who teaches them, through hands on experiences, how to prepare and cook the vegetables for dinner.
The night ends with the kids enjoying dinner and sharing the food with residents of the Safe Harbor shelter.
There are a total of six farm-to-table tours scheduled for the Boys & Girls Club throughout the summer to give youth the opportunity to learn through their experiences on the farm.
Five youth members of the Sheboygan Falls Boys & Girls Club went on their first farm tour on July 19th at Old Plank Farm in Plymouth.
Sadie, one of the youth that went on the trip, said “The experience of seeing the food go from the farm to dinner was cool. I liked serving the dinner.”
Overall it was a very unique and educational experience for the youth.
The farm tours consist of many educational opportunities for the youth. Not only does it provide the Boys & Girls Club members with knowledge of where fresh vegetables come from, but also teaches them the value of giving back to the community.
As the Boys & Girls Club strives to prepare youth to become caring, responsible citizens, the farm-totable tours are just one way to enhance that goal and provide youth with valuable experiences.
The Boys & Girls Club farm tours are possible thanks to the Pepsi Refresh Grant.
