Falcons outlast Blue Bombers
by Steve Ottman Falls News correspondent
Sheboygan Falls Falcons sophomore Will Meyer drilled a shot to the left corner of the goal in the first minute of double overtime to lift the Falcons to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Kohler Blue Bombers in the season opener for both teams Tuesday, Aug. 17, in Sheboygan Falls.
Meyer, who was left wide open on a throw in pass, stopped the ball and turned, sending the ball past the outstretched hands of the Bombers’ goalie in the 91st minute of play.
“This was a great way to get a win,” said Falcons first year coach Kris Rusch. “Both teams played hard and were tired at the end. We made the shot that counted.”
Falcons senior Karl Huberty knocked in the first goal of the season on a crossing pass from junior Matt Marusich to give the Falls squad a 1-0 lead with eight minutes left in the first half.
Kohler’s John Benishek tied the game 1-1 in the 49th minute of the second half.
Both sides played a physical game, as Kohler outshot Falls 22-10. Falcons’ sophomore goalie Ryan Halverson recorded 17 saves.
“We gave up a lot of shots,” remarked Rusch. “We still have a lot of work to do.”
