Breast Fest 2010 for breast cancer prevention/research in Falls Sept. 11

Breast Fest is an event organized to raise funds for research and prevention of breast cancer, and to assist local families fighting this disease. Plans are being made for the third annual event, Breast Fest 2010, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11, at The Other Place Pub and Eatery, 406 Broadway in Sheboygan Falls.

The Koene family of Sheboygan Falls has been diligent in organizing this event each year in an attempt to pay forward the kindness and generous donations their daughter, Elizabeth Howard, received during her battle with breast cancer. Last year the event raised $8,000, which was donated to St. Nicholas Hospital and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The year prior, the benefit proceeds went toward pledging $7,000 to the Susan G. Komen 3 day Breast Cancer walk in the Twin Cities.

While Elizabeth continues to be healthy and cancer free, she and her family and friends are celebrating, giving back to women everywhere by way of the Susan G. Komen foundation and to local cancer patients through the Sheboygan Cancer Care fund. The proceeds raised at this year's Breast Fest will support education and technology to aid in the treatment, prevention, and hopefully elimination of breast cancer.

The day will start out with a 5K walk/run beginning at River Park. Last year over 100 people raced their way through the city to raise money for breast cancer. This year they hope to attract even more people. Participants in this event will have an added chance to show their support by sporting pink hair extensions courtesy of Addicted Industries.

Registration for the run/walk will begin at 8 a.m., with the race to follow at 9 a.m.

Proceeds from this service will also benefit Breast Fest 2010. Refreshments for the race have been donated by Blattner's Piggly Wiggly, Sheboygan Falls Q Mart, and Big Apple Bagels.

An addition to this year's event is a poker run designed for motorcycle riders or avid car drivers. Sign up for the poker run will begin at 10:30 a.m. at The Other Place Pub & Eatery. The cost will include a T-shirt. The route will take approximately five hours and wind its way through Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Fond du Lac counties.

Favorite fund-raising methods will return this year as well. Festivities at The Other Place will begin at noon and include a brat fry, raffles, silent auctions, pink drink specials, and live music by The King Fish and other local musicians.
