WALDO – Danial Johnson, age 12, Waldo, is the son of Bob and Jodi Johnson. He is a member of the Country Critters 4-H Club and decided to make a gun cabinet for his dad as his woodworking project. A little help from an Amish friend, Andy, and the finished project won him a Merit Award at the Sheboygan County Fair.
“I got the idea because my dad’s cabinet is falling apart and old,” Johnson said, “so I just decided to make a new one.
“Andy – is my dad’s friend and he’s Amish, had a pattern, because he had made one before,” Johnson continued.
The cabinet can hold 10 guns, has glass doors on the top and doors on the bottom but no shelves. It is made out of oak.
“My dad said he wanted one 8 feet tall so it’s 8 feet tall, about 3 feet wide and 12 inches deep,” Johnson said. “It has notched gun holders inside.
“I did most of it,” Johnson stated. “Andy helped cut it and I put it together. All the pieces are screwed together.
“I learned that it’s not all about the ribbon and stuff,” Johnson said. “It’s just about having fun and I had fun. I made it at Andy’s house.
“I did do a lot of sanding and varnishing,” Johnson added.
“I really like it,” Johnson said. “It turned out like I hoped it would. My whole family is into hunting.
“My dad was really proud of me for making it because it was a hard project to do. My mom said I did a good job.
“The judge said it was good in form and well stained,” Johnson said. “It will be put in my mom and dad’s room.”
