Spotlight Theatre announces auditions for `Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf’
Spotlight Theatre Company will be holding auditions for the upcoming production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.” Guest director Ralph Maffongelli will direct this classic piece of drama.
Auditions will be Monday, Sept. 13, from 6-8 p.m. (preferred auditioning time). If you are unable to attend auditions Monday, there will be audition considerations from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14. Callbacks will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14. Auditions will be held at the Spotlight Theatre office, 3893 Enterprise Drive in Sheboygan.
There is no need for a prepared piece; however, the theatre suggests looking at the script before auditioning so that you are familiar with the plot and energy of the show.
Spotlight will be looking for four people: two women and two men. Martha is a large, boisterous woman, 52, looking somewhat younger. George, Martha’s husband, is 46, thin with graying hair. Honey is 26; a petite blonde girl who is rather plain. Nick, Honey’s husband, is 30, blonde and good-looking.
Martha invites a new professor (Nick) and his wife to their house after a college faculty introduction party put on by her father, the president of the college where George is an associate history professor. It is 2 o’clock in the morning when George and Martha arrive home and their guests arrive shortly after. Nick is a biology professor (who Martha believes is from the math department), and Honey is his mousy, brandyabusing wife.
The play involves the two couples playing “games,” which are savage verbal attacks against one or two of the others at the party. These games are referred to with sarcastically alliterative names: “Humiliate the Host,” “Get the Guests,” “Hump the Hostess,” and “Bringing Up Baby.” Throughout all the verbal and sometimes physical abuse that Martha and George throw at each other, the younger couple is simultaneously fascinated and embarrassed. They stay even though the abuse turns periodically toward them as well.
“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” will perform Oct. 22-24 at StageWorks at EBCO Venture Center as a dinner theatre production.
