Panthers bounce TR in EWC play
The Plymouth Panthers swept away Two Rivers, 7-0, in Eastern Wisconsin Conference girls dual tennis action on a hot Tuesday afternoon at the PHS courts.
PHS, which improved to 2-0 in the EWC (6-5 overall), won every match in straight sets.
“It was a solid effort from top to bottom by the team in less-than-ideal playing conditions,” said Panther head coach Tom Pederson.
“I was proud of the effort by the entire team.”
TRIPLE-DUAL
The Panthers competed in a triple-dual Friday at Fond du Lac and came away with a 1-2 record against stiff competition. PHS edged Hartford Union, 4-3; and lost to powerful Oshkosh West, 7-0, and Fond du Lac, 6-1.
PHS won three of the four singles matches against Hartford which proved to be the difference. Plymouth’s winners in singles play were Elizabeth Raeder at No. 1, Rachel Eggert, No. 2 and Lauren Schwalenberg, No. 3.
Also winning for the Panthers against Hartford were Lizzy Stanczyk and Amanda Gumm at No. 1 doubles.
Plymouth’s only victor in the Fond du Lac meet was Emily Schirmer at No. 4 singles.
“I was extremely proud of the effort given by every Plymouth player. Fond du Lac and Oshkosh West are among the better teams in the state,” said Pederson.
“Special recognition is given to Elizabeth Raeder who showed outstanding poise and determination against very talented players.”
The triple-dual concluded a grueling week for the Panthers as they played eight duals in five days and posted a 4-4 record.
“It was very demanding – both physically and mentally – playing eight matches in five days against very talented teams,” Pederson said.
JV RESULTS
Plymouth’s Rachael Thompson and Erin Doherty placed second in their respective singles divisions at the Sheboygan North Junior Varsity Invitational Aug. 17. Both Panthers posted 2-1 records. PHS took sixth in the eight-team meet.
Last Thursday, the PHS JV played host Sheboygan Falls. Winning matches for the Panthers were the following doubles teams: Shyanne Heimerl/Thompson, Doherty/Angie Schleh, Forum Patel/Michelle Odgers, Taylor Haese/Sara DeGroff and Nicole Dessloch/Brooke Lemkuil.
“The ladies showed a lot of enthusiasm and worked hard,” said PHS JV coach Karen Hogue about her squad in the two meets.
