PLYMOUTH – The 2010 Sheboygan County Holstein Futurity Event was held Sunday, Sept. 5, at the Sheboygan County Fair. There were 27 entries, and the Coliseum was filled with spectators to watch this annual event.
There was a great deal of emotion when Kim Henschel's entry of Deervue Acres, Elkhart Lake, Klumbs Roy Durham Star, was chosen as the winner. That emotion was reiterated when her husband, Jim, embraced her and gave an approving smile.
Kim and Jim have three children, Sarah, age 9, Austin, age 7-1/2 years old and Katelyn, age 3. The Henschels took over Deervue Acres operation from Jim's parents, Bernie and Arylis Henschel. Deervue Acres lies between Road America and the Broughton Sheboygan Marsh park. The farm consists of 150 cows with a rolling average of 23,000 pounds of milk, 4.1 percent, 864 pounds of butterfat and 3 percent, 635 pounds protein and they run approximately 500 acres.
The judge for the day was Todd Wendorff. He and his wife, Christa, farm near Ixonia at Crescentmead Holsteins.
“I would enjoy milking this animal,” Wendorff said. “She has a fantastic udder; I love her udder and the teat size. I like how she walks and how her feet and legs look.
“Any one of these animals today could be a winner in another county or if placed against other animals, but today I pick this one,” said Wendorff, referring to Klumbs Roy Durham Star.
New this year was the presentation of a Production Award winner. That award was presented to Gary Depies from Depies Shady Lane LLC and his entry Depies-LLC Outside Dyna. Dyna has a two-year record of 27,227 pounds of milk; 1,109 pounds of fat and 782 pounds of protein in 305 days. Her cheese yield is 2,665.

The Sheboygan County Holstein Futurity began in 2000. The purpose of the Futurity is to stimulate interest in breeding and exhibiting outstanding officially identified Holsteins. Holstein breeders choose calves they believe will grow and develop into cows that will be productive on the farm and competitive in the show ring.
The cows exhibited for 2010 were entered as calves before January 2008 and were born between Sept. 1, 2006 and Aug. 31, 2007. They are shown as 3-year-olds during this show season.
Platinum sponsors for the event are National Exchange Bank and Trust, Dan Tongen, and Schulz Dippel Trucking, Randy Dippel.
