Many Community Ed & Rec classes begin week of Sept. 13
Many fitness, aquatic, youth and general education courses offered by Plymouth Community Education & Recreation begin the week of Sept. 13.
General education courses include:
Knitting: Learn the two basic stitches, many variations, and pattern reading while making a washcloth, slippers and a project of your choice. Class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays from Sept. 13 to Nov. 1 in Plymouth High School C103.
Knitted Mittens: Participants in this new course will learn to make wool mittens with a provided pattern using two sets of double-pointed needles and then needle felt a decoration on them. Class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 5 in Plymouth High School C103.
Crochet: Learn the basic stitches and make samples, a granny square, a few motifs and a lovely scarf. Class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 15 to Nov. 3 in Plymouth High School Room C103.
Self Safety: This new course teaches participants ages 14 and up to stay safe in a nonviolent but effective way, using select techniques from various martial arts. The first session will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 15 and 16. A second, identical session will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 22 and 23. Both sessions meet in Plymouth High School Room C120.
Astronomy: Learn your way around the constellations, the mares and craters of the moon, and the planets that you see at night. Observations will be made using the naked eye, binoculars and telescopes. Class meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21 in Plymouth High School Room B119.
Youth and family courses include:
Babysitting Clinic: Students 10 years of age and older will learn how to be babysitters. Class meets from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 16 and 23 in the Riverview Middle School library.
Karate: This new class for those ages 13 and up will teach open-hand (unarmed) combative approaches as well as the use of a 6-foot staff called a “bo.” Class will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 14 to Nov. 11 at the Plymouth Youth Center.
Fitness courses include:
Body Basics: This class features low-impact aerobics with energetic music and offers 40 minutes of cardio followed by 20 minutes of toning and stretching. Activities include basic steps and weight training. Class meets from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 28 in the Riverview Middle School cafeteria.
Core Fitness: Tighten and tone your midsection with the use of exercise balls and strength bands along with increasing your flexibility and balance in this low-impact class. Class meets from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26 on the Riverview gym balcony.
Group Cycling: Choose your intensity and enjoy the ride as you climb hills, ride the flat road and sprint to the finish line. The morning class meets from 5:15 to 6 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Sept. 13 to Oct. 27 on the Riverview gym balcony.
The evening class meets from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26 on the Riverview gym balcony.
Top Flight Fitness: The class begins with a warm-up and continues into aerobics, designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system, before concluding with stretching for flexibility. The early morning class meets from 5 to 6 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Sept. 13 to Dec. 17 (no class Nov. 26) in the Riverview gym.
The morning class meets from 8 to 9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Sept. 13 to Dec. 17 (no class Nov. 26) at the Plymouth Youth Center.
The evening class meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 14 to Dec. 16 (no class Nov. 25) in the Parkview Elementary School gym.
Zumba: This Latin-based dance class will help you shape and sculpt your body through basic steps and movements. The Monday class will meet from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. from Sept. 13 to Dec. 13 in the Riverview cafeteria.
The Tuesday class will meet from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. from Sept. 14 to Dec. 14 at the Plymouth Youth Center.
The Wednesday class will meet from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15 (no class Nov. 24) in the Riverview cafeteria.
Zumba Gold: This kinder version of Zumba is designed for the active older adult, the beginner to exercise, and those who may be limited physically. The Monday class will meet from 9:45-10:35 a.m. from Sept. 13 to Dec. 13 at the Plymouth Youth Center.
The Wednesday class will meet from 9:45 to 10:35 a.m. from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15 (no class Nov. 24) at the Plymouth Youth Center.
Aquatic courses include:
Aqua Fitness: This low to medium shallow water workout will focus on flexibility, range of motion, muscle toning and stress relief. It is perfect for those who are older, overweight or pregnant, have health concerns or are beginning to exercise. Class meets from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 14 to Dec. 9 (no class Sept. 16 and 23, Oct. 7 and Nov. 25).
Daytime Aqua Dynamics: This shallow water class includes upbeat music and a challenging fun routine to get you sweating in unbeatable style. Class meets from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays from Sept. 14 to Dec. 10 (no class Nov. 26).
In the Deep: This nonimpact deep-water class will get your heart rate pumping and muscles toned by using the resistance of the water for a great workout. Class meets from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Sept. 13 to Dec. 6 (no class Nov. 24).
Water Works: This medium to high shallow water workout will focus on muscle resistance and cardiovascular conditioning with motivational moves and routines. The class meets from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays from Sept. 13 to Dec. 9 (no class Sept. 16 and 23, Oct. 7 and Nov. 25).
Lap Swim: Proficient, serious swimmers are invited to swim laps at the PHS pool. Lanes will be available from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 15 to Dec. 8 (off Nov. 24) and from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Saturdays from Oct. 2 to Dec. 11 (off Nov. 6 and 27 and Dec. 4).
Those ages 62 and older living in the district are eligible for a 20 percent discount on most courses.
Online registration is available for all of these classes, which allows people to pay with a credit card and receive immediate confirmation of enrollment.
