Volunteers sought for literacy training

The Literacy Council Project of the Family Resource Center of Sheboygan County is looking for volunteers to provide literacy tutoring to adults.

As part of the Sept. 8 kickoff to the annual 1200 Tutors in 12 Weeks campaign, the Literacy Council Project will provide free training for new adult literacy tutors on Sept. 14 and 16. The training for new volunteer tutors will take place in Sheboygan from 5:30-9 p.m. each evening.

Volunteer tutors provide one-to-one tutoring for adults who wish to improve their literacy skills, or learn to read, write, and speak English. If you have a couple of hours a week to devote to helping an adult improve his or her literacy skills, please consider becoming a volunteer tutor. Literacy tutors are needed throughout Sheboygan County.

Literacy Council tutors help adult learners gain the literacy skills they need to achieve their individual goals, such as getting a job or promotion, advancing their education, helping their child with homework, and communicating with service and health care providers.

The Literacy Council has partnered with Wisconsin Literacy for its annual 1200 Tutors in 12 Weeks campaign. The campaign, sponsored by Verizon and Alliant Energy Foundation, aims to recruit 1,200 new literacy tutors across Wisconsin. The Literacy Council Project will receive funds from Wisconsin Literacy based on the number of new volunteer tutors recruited and trained from Sept. 8 through Dec. 1.

To register for training or to request more information, please call 920-457-1888 or 920-892-6706, or email Jo Ann Dent at frcliteracy@excel.net. Learn more about the Literacy Council Project of the Family Resource Center by visiting www.frc-sc.org.
