HG Tigers loss to Kiel
HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers dug themselves a 21-0 hole as they lost to visiting Kiel, 35-14, in nonconference football Friday night.
Howards slipped to 0-2 and the Raiders improved to 2-0.
The Tigers were plagued by four turnovers, including three lost fumbles. Kiel built its lead to 21-0 after Gage McGeough recovered a Tiger fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the third quarter.
The Raiders grabbed a 14-0 halftime lead on a pair of TD runs by Derek Fritsch.
Howards’ first score came on quarterback Noah Steines’ 5-yard pass to tight end Ashton Holzman in the third period, cutting Kiel’s lead to 21-14.
The Tigers’ other TD came on running back Duston Rabe’s 10-yard run in the fourth quarter which made it a 28-14 game.
“We showed remarkable improvement, especially the running game in the second half,” said Tiger head coach David Schmid. “We opened some holes against their first-string defense in the second half.
“I give credit to Duston who ran the ball real hard and to the offensive line which opened holes in the second half. Our defense continued to play well.
“We still have a long way to go but if we continue to improve, we should have a pretty successful season,” Schmid said.
Rabe rushed for a game-high 115 yards on only 11 carries. Kiel ran for 251 yards, led by quarterback Geddy Nordby’s 69 on 12 attempts.
